UIA INTERNATIONAL FORUM

The 2024 UIA International Forum will take place in Kuala Lumpur on 15-19 November. Speaking during the soft launch on 22 February, President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects Abu Zarim Abu Bakar informed that the Forum would aim to bring light to the complex challenges modern cities face and discover strategies that prioritise human well-being alongside environmental stewardship.

UIA WORLD CONGRESS OF ARCHITECTS

The 2026 UIA World Congress of Architects will take place on 28 June to 2 July 2026 in Barcelona. In preparation for the event, Congress Commissioners have announced the development of an extensive network of experts to turn Barcelona and its metropolitan area into an architectural research laboratory whose results will be exhibited during the Congress. With the theme, “Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition”, the Congress will analyse the ability of architecture to transform reality in time.

INTERNATIONAL VELUX AWARD

Registration is open for the International VELUX Award for students of architecture 2024. The award also challenges students to use sunlight and daylight as main sources of energy and illumination and to ensure health and well-being of the people who live and work in buildings. The award is open for all students of architecture – either in teams or as individuals – who are enrolled in a course at university level in 2023/2024.

HUNGARY: AHA  CONVENTION

The Association of Hungarian Architects will organise the AHA International Convention of Architecture 2024 in Budapest on 8 March. Curated by Ulf Meyer (Berlin) the Convention’s theme will be “Value-Based Architecture”.

CANADA: 2024 RAIC GOLD MEDAL

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced that Murray Sinclair will be the recipient of the 2024 RAIC Gold Medal. The award is the highest honour given for a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture.

COSTA RICA: INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL

The Colegio de Arquitectos de Costa Rica will hold its 17th international biennial on 29 May to 1 June 2024. With the theme “Circular Architecture”, the event will introduce new categories including urban and regional planning, social housing and better climate adaptation.

KENYA: BUILT ENVIRONMENT REPORT

The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) launched the 2023 Status of the Built Environment (SBE) report. This report provides an overview of the current state of the built environment in Kenya, highlighting key trends, challenges, and opportunities.

  PRITZKER PRIZE  ▼

Riken Yamamoto (Japan) is the 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. In conferring the award, the jury cited his "long, coherent, rigorous career" during which he "has managed to produce architecture both as background and foreground to everyday life". Yamamoto is the 53rd Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the ninth to hail from Japan. 

Significant built works  include Nagoya Zokei University (Nagoya, Japan, 2022), THE CIRCLE at Zürich Airport (Zürich, Switzerland, 2020), Tianjin Library (Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, 2012)  and Hotakubo Housing (Kumamoto, Japan, 1991).
